PITTSBURGH — George Kittle, the star tight end, is set to take the field today with a remarkable goal in mind: finding the end zone in a 49ers' season opener, a challenge that has eluded him thus far.
Kittle's availability had hung in the balance due to a nagging groin issue that resurfaced during the preseason finale. It originally appeared about a month ago during grueling training camp sessions. It's worth noting that Kittle had to sit out the first two games of the previous season due to a groin injury, making his return all the more significant.
This development brings a smile to the face of Brock Purdy, who formed a potent partnership with Kittle, resulting in seven of Purdy's career-high 11 touchdown receptions last season. Kittle boasts a track record of making a splash in season openers, consistently tallying at least four receptions in each of his previous opening games. Notably, he hauled in eight receptions for a total of 54 yards in the 2019 season opener against Tampa Bay. Just a fortnight later, Kittle continued his impressive form with six catches, amassing 57 yards, in the 49ers' thrilling 24-20 victory over the Steelers at the iconic Levi's Stadium.
Cornerback Charvarius Ward, who was previously listed as questionable, has received the green light and is all set to take the field today. It's highly anticipated that he will be starting for the team.
On the flip side, as for the players who won't be suiting up for today's game, here's the rundown: First, quarterback Brandon Allen will be dressed, but not in his usual role. He'll serve as an emergency third quarterback. Joining him on the inactive list are guard Nick Zakelj, defensive tackle Kalia Davis, and linebackers Dee Winters and Jalen Graham. Tight end Brayden Willis and running back Ty Davis-Price will also be sitting this one out.
Now, turning our attention to the Steelers, their list of inactive players includes quarterback Mason Rudolph, who will be taking on the role of the No. 3 quarterback today. Joining him are cornerback Desmond King, offensive tackle Dylan Cook, receiver Gunner Olszewski, and defensive lineman Armon Watts.
But before the game, there was an intriguing pregame moment that caught everyone's eye. The first 49ers player to hit the field before warmups was none other than rookie kicker Jake Moody. He spent roughly 10 minutes practicing imaginary long-distance field goals, pushing the limits as far back as 75 yards. About 90 minutes before kickoff, Moody transitioned to kicking with a placement tee, and it was during this time that Steelers' kicker Chris Boswell came over to exchange greetings.
What's worth noting is that Moody had been sidelined in the 49ers' preseason finale due to a sore right quadriceps. However, his recovery progress has been nothing short of impressive. It was impressive enough, in fact, that the team made the decision to release their backup plan, Matthew Wright, from the practice squad just this past Saturday. That speaks volumes about Moody's determination and ability to bounce back when it counts.
